In this instalment of the Life at FT Blog, we sit down with Jonathan Florez, account planner and FT Embrace co-lead (US). FT Embrace is an internal community that aims to amplify the experiences of globally marginalised groups by building a culturally aware workplace and celebrating race, ethnicity and faith. We highlight their efforts during Black history month, supporting Black-owned businesses, and collaborating with FT Proud. We also look at Jonathan’s personal journey as a first-generation immigrant and proud Latino, which guides his commitment to inclusion within the FT and society at large.
Tell us a little about FT Embrace (US) and what you do?
FT Embrace aims to educate individuals about the experiences of underrepresented communities by hosting discussions and events on topics like race, ethnicity, faith, and culture. For example, we hosted a talk with the chief diversity officer of the NYPD on the anniversary of George Floyd's death and a talk with the founder of Mixteca on the current migrant crisis in New York.
Our impact extends beyond FT's offices. In 2023, we raised over $4,000 for charities like Mixteca, which supports the Latinx community, and Stop AAPI Hate, which fights against racism and racial injustice targeting the AAPI community. We also actively supported Black-owned businesses throughout New York City.
Can you tell us more about how your ERG celebrated Black history month this year?
This year we wanted to provide the NY office with a chance to reflect, learn, and foster a deeper understanding of the diverse narratives that have shaped our history. Our private tour of the Jackie Robinson Museum revealed a place that celebrates the enduring legacy of one of the 20th century's most influential figures. The museum chronicles Robinson's groundbreaking achievements against the backdrop of U.S. history, invoking his role as a champion for racial, social, and economic equality. The programming at the museum places a strong emphasis on fostering dialogue about critical issues that continue to challenge our society.
To conclude the month and enhance our community involvement, we organised a virtual raffle open to all employees in the US office. Participants could enter by supporting a Black-owned business or attending an internal or external Black history month event.
In addition to our own events, we also curated a comprehensive list of external events that took place throughout the month.
These activities not only contributed to a meaningful cause but also raised awareness of the FT's presence in the community, in support of local businesses, we sourced raffle prizes from Black-owned businesses and provided our employees with breakfast from the Pig and Butter, one of our favourite local Black-owned restaurants.
About your collaboration with FT Proud, why is intersectionality important?
FT Embrace and FT Proud decided to host a mocktail mixer and attend the screening of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". This 1982 documentary offers a unique perspective on the civil rights era through the eyes of James Baldwin, a writer and activist best known for his semi-autobiographical works exploring race, politics and sexuality.
Our goal was to unite deeply marginalised and frequently overlooked communities. Through collaboration, we want to support one another and amplify our voices, doubling our impact and allowing us to build connections and overcome obstacles together.
The FT's values are Ambition, Inclusion, Integrity, Curiosity, Trust and Subscriber Focused. In relation to your role within FT Embrace, which of these values speaks to you most and why?
Inclusion speaks to me the most within my role at FT Embrace.
Growing up as a first-generation immigrant from Colombia and a proud Latino, I have experienced firsthand the challenges faced by minority and undervalued communities. This background has instilled in me a profound sense of empathy and understanding for those who are often marginalised or overlooked. Inclusion, to me, is not just about diversity in numbers but about creating a culture where every voice is heard, respected, and valued. It is about ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds feel welcome, supported, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. Given my personal journey and commitment to advocating for positive change, the value of Inclusion resonates deeply with me. I believe that by fostering an inclusive environment within FT Embrace and beyond, we can truly make a meaningful impact and create a more equitable society for all.
