The Financial Times was the big winner at Press Gazette’s Future of Media Awards 2023 with top prizes in four categories: newsletter, podcast, digital storytelling and news media app.

Inside Politics, a daily newsletter written by associate editor and columnist Stephen Bush on UK politics and policy, won the Newsletter category. The judges said: “This publisher has clearly invested in newsletters and does them well. This is a really sharp newsletter which has already become a must-read.”

Hot Money, the FT’s investigative podcast series on the porn industry, took home the top Podcast award. The eight-month investigation, led by FT correspondent Patricia Nilsson and world news editor Alex Barker, was described by the judges as “an engaging, pacy and revelatory production.”

Inside North Korea’s oil smuggling, a visual investigation on triads, ghost ships and underground banks, won the Digital Storytelling category. The FT worked with the Royal United Services Institute, which spent over a year gathering materials on North Korea’s oil procurement networks. The judges said: “This was digital-first storytelling at its best using video, photography, graphics, typography and data visualisation to bring an impressive body of evidence to life.”

FT Edit was recognised as News Media App of the Year. Launched in 2022, FT Edit features eight of the FT’s best stories hand-picked every weekday by senior editors. The judges said the app was “a great idea, thoughtfully executed, which is reaching news audiences, driving subscriptions and building awareness of this brand’s excellent journalism.”

FT.com was also highly commended in the news / current affairs website category.
