The Financial Times seasonal appeal has raised more than £600,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, one of the world’s leading dementia research charities.
As part of the appeal, FT journalists reported on the challenges and impact of dementia, which affects nearly 50 million people around the world. The coverage combined the best of the FT’s science and international reporting along with personal stories from readers and FT contributors, including former UK prime minister and now President of Alzheimer’s Research UK David Cameron and philanthropist Bill Gates.
FT deputy editor Roula Khalaf said: “The Financial Times would like to thank its readers, who not only donated generously to the appeal but also opened up about their own personal experiences with dementia. I am proud of the contribution the FT made to public awareness about a little understood condition.”
Tim Parry, director of communications & brand at Alzheimer's Research UK, said: “The charity has been amazed by the generosity of FT readers throughout the appeal, and the quality of discussion they have engendered around this crucial issue. The partnership with the FT was also an unrivalled opportunity to improve understanding of a most misunderstood condition through insightful journalism and features that have challenged outmoded views. This is an important legacy to the appeal that will help Alzheimer’s Research UK’s work today and into the future.”
A matching scheme for donations up to a total of £300,000 was generously provided by Goldman Sachs.
Since 2006, FT appeals have raised over £17m for charity partners. Charities interested in applying for the 2018-2019 seasonal appeal can find further information here.
