FTChinese received the Award for Excellence in Opinion Writing and an Honorable Mention in the same category at the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards for Editorial Excellence in Hong Kong last night. The Financial Times also received Honorable Mentions in The Scoop Award, Explanatory Reporting and Opinion Writing categories.
FTChinese’s winning article for Opinion Writing,《“非典型领导人”胡耀邦》“Atypical leaders,” Hu Yaobang detailed how Hu Yaobang, a former high-ranking official of the People’s Republic of China, was forced to resign, signalling the end of the Cultural Revolution. A piece on the management of Chinese higher education,《中国大学目睹之怪现状》Chinese universities have witnessed a strange situation, also received an Honorable Mention.
Jamil Anderlini, Asia editor; Charles Clover, China correspondent; Gabriel Wildau, Shanghai bureau chief; and Patti Waldmeir, Shanghai correspondent, received an Honourable Mention for Excellence in Explanatory Reporting for their article ‘China’s Great Game', which explores various aspects of the One Belt One Road initiative.
Patti Waldmeir also received an Honourable Mention for Excellence in Opinion Writing for her multimedia report ‘Inside the Outsider’s Shanghai’. Waldmeir’s witty prose complement candid videos from Shanghai expatriates who capture the good and the bad about life in Shanghai as a foreigner.
The FT also received an Honourable Mention in The Scoop Award for coverage of Hanergy Thin Film, which involved journalists in Hong Kong, Beijing and London, and resulted in the company’s demise. The FT’s investigation revealed a previously hidden world of shadow finance, and highlighted regulators’ concerns over the true financial state of many Chinese companies that have rocketed to prominence in recent years.
The SOPA Awards, designed to encourage editorial vitality throughout Asia, recognise journalistic excellence across a number of platforms, and cover range of categories that reflect the region’s diverse geo-political environment and vibrant editorial scene.
