FT at Davos 2017

With the world braced for change in 2017, the 47th annual World Economic Forum in Davos saw global political and business leaders meet to discuss the overarching theme of “Responsive and Responsible Leadership”.

To coincide with the forum, the Financial Times published The World in 2017 and produced multimedia coverage with breaking takes on FastFT; as well as a number of videos, daily Facebook Live broadcasts, and in-depth analysis and comment.

The FT also featured throughout the World Economic Forum’s main programme, including:

  • US managing editor Gillian Tett chaired ‘Protectionism: Back to the Future?’ with panellists David Abney, chairman and CEO of UPS; Roberto Azevêdo, director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO); David M. Cote, chairman and CEO of Honeywell; Min Zhu, deputy managing director (2011-2016) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF); and Cecilia Malmström, EU commissioner of trade.
  • FT deputy editor Roula Khalaf led a session with Nicolas Dujovne, Minister of Treasury of Argentina, Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Finance of South Africa, Wolfgang Schäuble, Federal Minister of Finance of Germany and Mehmet Simsek, Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey. The panel discussed charting a new course for growth for the G20 nations.
  • Chief economics commentator Martin Wolf moderated the annual ‘Global Economic Outlook’ featuring Laurence D. Fink, chairman and CEO, BlackRock; Philip Hammond, United Kingdom’s Chancellor of the Exchequer; Haruhiko Kuroda, Governor of the Bank of Japan; Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Wolfgang Schäuble, Federal Minister of Finance, Germany.

The eighth edition of the FT CNBC Nightcap party took place at the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère. Hosted by FT CEO John Ridding and CNBC chairman Mark Hoffman, the event gathered 400 of the world’s most influential business leaders, government officials, entrepreneurs and thought leaders.

To round off FT activity in Davos, Citi also sponsored a dinner featuring a conversation between Martin Wolf and Christine Lagarde on global growth and making the global economy work for all.
