The Financial Times was honoured for its news coverage, investigations, and multimedia journalism in several different awards this week:
2016 European Newspaper Awards
The FT took home three prizes for online graphics and multimedia storytelling at the 2016 European Newspaper Award for Concept/Innovation Online:
“A visual guide to Brexit” won the Infographics category for using an interactive presentation to teach readers about the EU ahead of the vote for Britain to leave the EU.
The award for Best Concept/Innovation Online went to two FT projects, “The Great Land Rush” and “Seven Robots You Need to Know.”
- “The Great Land Rush,” a multimedia storytelling project supported by the Pulitzer Center, is a wide-ranging, investigative series that examines the global race for one of the world’s most precious resources—land. The veteran investigative team of Tom Burgis, Michael Peel, Pilita Clark reported from Ethiopia, Myanmar and Indonesia.
- “Seven Robots You Need to Know” explores the ways in which researchers are trying to create general purpose robots, which can replicate tasks that human do easily.

British Society of Magazine editors awards
FT’s Life & Arts commentator Simon Kuper was named ‘Best Columnist’ in the Consumer & General Interest Brand category at the British Society of Magazine Editors awards. The judges commented that readers “love this columnist” for combining “research with passion, insightful comments and an authentic reason to buy”.
How to Spend It, FT’s luxury lifestyle publication, was shortlisted in the ‘Newspaper / Current Affairs Brand’ category and FT Weekend Magazine’s Mark Leeds and Paul Tansley were shortlisted for the Art Director of the Year accolade.

Bastiat Prize
Tim Harford was named the winner of the Bastiat Prize for economic journalism, which celebrates journalists whose writing best explains and elucidates the importance of freedom with originality, wit, and eloquence.
He also won the prize in 2006, and was runner-up in 2010.
Tim is the author of four economics books and a long-running Financial Times column, “The Undercover Economist”.
State Street Institutional Press Awards
FT journalists took home two prizes at the 2016 UK State Street Institutional Press Awards, which recognise editorial excellence in financial journalism.
- Emma Dunkley, retail banking correspondent, was named ‘Breaking news journalist of the year’.
- Attracta Mooney, of FTfm was named ‘Investment journalist of the year’.
Santander UK Media Awards
FTAdviser was honoured at the Santander UK Media Awards on Thursday evening, in the personal finance trade/professional website category.
FTAdviser was selected as the nation’s best trade website from more than 250 entries and by a panel of more than 20 independent judges.
Judges said: “This title has a reputation for delivering hard hitting exclusives as well as quality analysis and opinion to its audience on the issues that really count.”
Financial Adviser was also named runner-up in the Financial Trade/Professional title of the year category.

CIPR Education Journalism Awards
The FT took home two prizes at the CIPR Education Journalism awards. The awards aim to celebrate and promote captivating specialist education journalism.
- Business education correspondent Jonathan Moules won the award for Outstanding Business and Professional Journalism.
- Public policy correspondent Helen Warrell won the award for Outstanding Higher Education Journalism.
