9 December 2020: The Financial Times was today named News Provider of the Year for the third year running at the 2020 Press Gazette British Journalism Awards.
The judges praised the FT for its coronavirus coverage and data analysis explaining the unfolding human tragedy. "Across the board, the FT has continued to punch well beyond its niche with quality journalism which has been quite simply exemplary," they remarked.
The FT also took home two awards for its multi-year investigation into German payments company Wirecard.
Investigative reporter Dan McCrum was named journalist of the year for his work uncovering one of the biggest accounting frauds in European corporate history.
McCrum, Olaf Storbeck and Stefania Palma won the Best Business Journalism category for their Wirecard reporting, and the team was also highly commended alongside FT’s Paul Murphy, Sam Jones and Helen Warrell in the investigation of the year category.
The judges described the Wirecard investigation as “business journalism at its best” and praised McCrum and team for their “brave and dogged” work which led to widespread ramifications throughout the global financial system.
The Press Gazette British Journalism Awards, now in their ninth year, recognise exceptional journalism in the public interest. A panel of judges from across the news industry judge entries on three criteria: revelation, journalistic rigour and public interest.
