The Financial Times’ Tech Tonic podcast won the Best Technology Podcast award at the 2024 Publisher Podcast Awards last night, which celebrate the best podcasts produced by media organisations.
Hosted by the FT’s innovation editor John Thornhill, Tech Tonic explores the best and worst of our technologically driven world, analysing the implications tech advancement has on society both past and present and how new innovations are shaping our everyday lives.
The podcast won the prize for its ‘Can AI help us speak to animals?’ series that looked closely at the technological developments that are helping scientists to get closer to their goal of ‘translating’ animal sounds to human language. The episodes were sound rich, with field recordings of bats in the wild and sound design by Breen Turner and Sam Giovinco.
Tech Tonic is presented by John Thornhilll and features a regular lineup of FT guests including AI editor Madhumita Murgia and China correspondent James Kynge. The production team includes Persis Love, Manuela Saragosa, Josh Gabert-Doyon and Edwin Lane, with sound design by Breen Turner and Sam Giovinco. Cheryl Brumley is the FT’s global head of audio.
Episodes of Tech Tonic are released fortnightly on Mondays. Listen to the series on ft.com, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
