The Financial Times has raised over $8000 for Girls Who Code through Edge, a non-profit conference hosted by the FT’s web technologies team, FT Labs, and Google.

Edge, a one-day event about advanced web technologies for developers and browser vendors, took place on 23 September 2013 in New York. Proceeds from the event went to Girls Who Code, a charity working to close the gender gap in the technology and engineering sectors by educating, inspiring, and equipping high school girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in computing fields.

Andrew Betts, FT Labs co-founder and director, remarked: “We are extremely pleased to donate funds to Girls Who Code, which is a wonderful charity and a great cause for the technology industry to support.”

Two students from Girls Who Code spent the day at Edge said that they gained deep, exclusive insight on important topics in the coding world, and that they hope to one day take part in similar panels covering current issues in technology.

Supported and funded by Google and FT Labs, Edge started in London in February 2013 with a lineup of delegates and speakers from the cutting edge of web development. The event is designed to give developers an opportunity to collaborate and bring improvements to the web platform. Everything is recorded and released to the public after the event.
