FT senior columnist Tim Harford has been named 2020 Wincott Journalist of the Year for his columns and features in the FT and three flagship programmes made for the BBC. The announcement commended Tim’s “range and versatility” and unique ability to “explain data and microeconomics in such an arresting and lucid style”.
Tim Harford writes the Undercover Economist column, and was previously an economics leader writer for the FT. Tim is the author of nine books, including the million-selling The Undercover Economist and most recently How To Make The World Add Up. He is also a regular presenter for BBC radio. He was made an OBE in the 2019 new year honours list “for services to improving economic understanding”.
The Audio Journalism of the Year award was also won by the FT podcast ‘Behind the Money’. The team included host Aimee Keane, producer Oluwakemi Aladesuyi, sound engineer Breen Turner and editor Liam Nolan. Judges said that it “stood out for its imaginative editorial judgement, covering topics from luxury goods to personal debt, and told important stories with clarity and insight.”
In the Data Journalism of the Year award, The FT’s Visual and Data Journalism Team --- Steven Bernard, John Burn-Murdoch, Tom Hannen, Bob Haslett, Caroline Nevitt, Jane Pong, Andrew Rininsland, Alan Smith, Martin Stabe, Cale Tilford, Aleksandra Wiśniewska and Claire Manibog -- were highly commended for their “magisterial analysis of the pandemic and its progress around the globe”.
Michael O’Dwyer, who recently joined the FT, won the Young Journalist of the Year award for his work at The Telegraph, and was commended for his “sharp reporting in a Lloyds Bank investigation”.
