Laura Hughes, FT political correspondent, has been named the Washington Post’s 2019 Stern fellow. She will be joining the Washington D.C.-based newsroom for the summer.

Laura was recently awarded Political Journalist of the Year at the 2018 British Journalism Awards for her reporting on sexual harassment at Westminster.

The Laurence Stern Fellowship is an annual internship programme which brings a British journalist to spend three months in the Washington Post newsroom. The fellowship was first established in 1979 by late Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee in tribute to top newsroom editor, Laurence Stern.

Laura is the fifth FT reporter to be named a Stern Fellow since the program was first established. In 2017, FT european technology correspondent Madhumita Murgia was awarded the opportunity. Prior to that, Cathy Newman and Mary Ann Seighart represented the FT Editorial team in the role, as had FT editor, Lionel Barber.
