6 December 2019: The first journalist for the Maisie Hylton fellowship has been named as Lloyd Harry-Davis. 

The inaugural fellowship, in honour of production journalist Maisie Hylton who sadly passed away in 2018, is aimed at aspiring BAME journalists who have an interest in current affairs and financial news. 

Lloyd will be working with the production and sub-editing teams during his six-month placement at the FT to learn how to edit print and online content. A graduate in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Warwick, Lloyd was deputy editor of student undergraduate academic journal, The Warwick Uncanny and wrote for his university newspaper, The Boar.

Earlier this year, the FT board signed up to the Creative Access mentoring programme, which helps young people from underrepresented communities in the UK gain access to creative careers. The FT is also working with the Journalism Diversity Fund to offer placements to NCTJ students, and partners with education and media charity The Student View to help improve media literacy among young students in underprivileged schools in London.

The FT is offering two six-month Maisie Hylton fellowships a year on the production desk, starting in January and July. The second Maisie Hylton fellow will be confirmed later this year. The fellowship for 2021 will open up again for applicants in September 2020 through Creative Access.
